In a somewhat quiet weekend of competition for Bury AC members, some athletes stayed local to search out competition. There was a Bury one-one-two in Saturday’s parkrun at Heaton Park. Ben Coop led from gun to tape as he ran out as winner in a time of 16.40. In second place, and recording a new best of 18.03, was Jack Griffiths whilst Katie Geelan finished first lady for the thirtieth time with a run of 19.57. Lucy Alcock (22.24) was first finisher in her age group (JW 15-17) and completed the course with Sophie Hill (22.21). Other Bury runners included Ed Hitchin, Colin Smith, Madeline Weston, Peter Henderson and Pam Hitchin.

On Sunday 7 Bury athletes competed in the Radcliffe AC’s 10k Multi-Terrain Race. Tony Cullen showed he is in good shape by taking second place (38.02) and was the first MV40 finisher. Cullen will be competing in the Iron Man half course event in Gran Canaria on 22nd April where one of his opponents will be none other than Olympic Champion Alistair Brownlee. Benn Heywood finished 13th overall with his time of 41.05 indicating that he still had the after-effects of the previous week’s Manchester Marathon in his legs. Mark Johnson made a welcome return to competition and took 30th place overall in 44.10 but was 6th in the MV50 category. Evergreen Ed Hitchin was first MV70 finisher (51.37) followed by daughter Pam (59.55), Harvey Wiseglass (59.59) and Nicola Brown (61.04).

The next significant competition for Bury athletes is the Youth Development League track and field fixture to be held at Bury’s Market Street track.
