Bury Athletic Club hosted an open throws competition at the Market Street track on Sunday. The event, which was open to athletes of all ages and in particular gave younger athletes the opportunity to compete in the new age groups that will apply to the sport after 1st April. The meeting proved to be very popular with all the available places across the hammer, shot, javelin and discus events being full. On the day, nearly 40 competitors took part, travelling from around the UK and collectively competing over 65 times across the four events. Nearly half of the competitors set new personal bests for their respective competitions. The club was very fortunate in securing a competition grant from England Athletics to support them in running the competition.
The first event was the hammer competition with Edward Jeans from Preston producing the longest throw of the day of 65.50 metres. Bury’s Evelyn McDonald, an under 12, made her competition debut in the event, recording a best throw of 15.05.
The shot competition was next with Wigan junior international Yasmin Baker putting furthest with 12.61 metres. Bury had Under 14 Violette Overlunde in the event and she set a new PB 7.24. Evelyn established a new PB of 4.33. The javelin ran concurrently with the shot with Stockport’s Fred Savage providing the longest throw of 45.60. Sadly a bad cold ruled Bury’s Jemima Miles out of the competition.
The discus was the final event with Leigh’s Jamie Greenhalgh coming out on top with 38.77 metres. Not far behind, making his debut, was Bury’s Christian Platt producing a best throw of 35.03. Violette produced a season’s best of 15.75 with Evelyn setting a new best of 12.36. The club extends its thanks to all competitors and the superb team of officials and volunteers that made the event possible.
