Bury’s Ben Clarke has been selected for his first England vest. The talented 16 year old javelin thrower has been picked to represent England at an indoor event in Sweden. It is very unusual for a javelin, or long throws, competition to be held indoors but England Athletics have identified the Vaxjo Throws International as great opportunity to offer a long throws competition to athletes in the winter months. It is specifically identified as a vehicle to offer development opportunities for athletes targeting a place in the Under 20 and Under 18 World Championships this summer. Ben is part of a team of 15 throwers who will compete for England on 7th February and he will represent his country in the Under 18s Javelin.

Ben’s coach, John Conroy, is delighted with the opportunity that has been afforded Ben. The selection signals that England Athletics see Ben as future World Championship potential. It also reflects the hard work that Ben consistently puts into his training. Ben’s personal best throw with the new specification 700g javelin stands at 62.04 metres and it was the longest throw by a 16 year old in the UK in 2025. Ben’s parents Matt and Penny are very proud of his achievements and the club acknowledges the fantastic support that they have given him.

Everyone at the club wishes Ben every success in the competition.
