Bury’s young athletes were amongst the medals in the Greater Manchester Schools Track and Field Championships held at a rain-soaked Longford Park Stadium on Saturday 11th June.

Sophie Whittaker, running for the last time in this fixture, retained the senior girls 3000m title, winning in 10.45.65.

Grace Goodsell, competing in the junior girls long jump won the silver medal with a new best leap of 5.10 – an English Schools qualifying standard. There were bronze medals for Hashim Shah (inter boys 100m in 11.77), James Coghlan (inter boys 200m in 24.25) and Hattie Vaughan (junior girls pole vault 2.75).

Francis Woodcock took 4th place in the junior boys 1500m in a new personal best of 4.43.98. Bury had two competitors in the junior girls 800m time trial, with Daisy Worthington taking 6th in 2.25.72 and Charlotte Speakman-Farnworth finishing 12th with a new pb of 2.33.33. An 800m personal best was also set by Alex Bennett in the inter boys final where he finished 7th in 2.12.64.

Heledd Rimmer took 6th place in the junior girls javelin with a throw of 19.92. Her better throws had been incorrectly ruled out by officials. Jenna Allen-Cartwright just missed out on a place in the inter girls 200m final, finishing 4th in her heat in 28.57.

The medallists now wait to see if they have been selected for the Greater Manchester team for the Mason representative match in the Midlands.
