Knowsley Safari Park was the venue for the North of England Cross Country Championships on 28th January. The athletes had to contend with a hard muddy and hilly course but thankfully the lions and tigers remained behind their bars. The highlight of the day came from Oliver Makinson who took 14th place in the very competitive under 17 men’s race, all the more impressive as this is his first year in the age category. Not to be outdone Sophie Whittaker produced a well-paced and tactically astute race in the under 20 women’s event and was rewarded with 15th position.

Sadly only the under 15 boys had enough athletes to finish in the team category with Brandon Quinton (62), Stefan Kalambouka (83), Jacob Stevens (143) and Oliver Donnelly (148) comining to take 14th position for the Bury team.

In the under 13s category the boys were represented by Noah Carter (135), Gilbert Vaughan (138) and Jacob Allen (161) and for the girls the competitors were Freya Potts (68) and Erin Kenyon (140).

For the under 15 girls Bury had Charlotte Speakman-Farnworth (122), Heledd Rimmer (136) and Ellie Carter (137) competing.

Nicola Brown was the lone Bury senior woman competing and she ran strongly to take 309th place. For the men, Bury’s finishers were Pierre Statsenko (356), Giles Bennett (417) and Nigel Brady (634).
