Bury’s Ben Coop ran out as a convincing winner in last Saturday’s Parkrun at Heaton Park. Ben set the pace from the start and came home 10 seconds clear of Salford Harrier’s Paul Simons, recording a time of 16.52. Giles Bennett produced another strong run, missing out on his pb by just 3 seconds with a time of 18.48, taking 11th place overall and first in his MV45-49 category. Taking a massive 21 seconds off her best time was Daisy Worthington with a 21.40 performance that saw her clear winner of her JW11-14 age category. Edward Hitchin joined the Parkrun 100 club with a strong run of 22.47 to finish first in the MV65-69 category.

Byron Edwards was Bury’s sole competitor in Saturday’s challenging Rivington Pike trail Half Marathon. He ran strongly to take 14th place out of a field of over 400 runners with a respectable time of 1:29.53.

A small squad of Bury athletes made the trip to Astley Park in Chorley for the Mid Lancs Cross Country League on 26th September. Top performance of the day came from Donna Cartwright in the senior women’s race, taking 8th place overall (3rd V35) with 27.14 in a welcome return from injury. Hot on Donna’s heels was Christie Cook, finishing in 20th place (3rd U20) in 28.51. In the senior men’s race, brothers Dave and Tony Cullen produced their trademark strong performances. Dave took 40th place in 39.36 holding off Tony who finished 63rd (41.42) in a field of 250 runners.

All these performances bode well for next Saturday’s opening Red Rose Cross Country League fixture at Leigh Sports Village. Bury have an impressive 137 athletes entered across the different races, with many of the younger athletes making their cross country debuts for the club.
