Emmanuel Mufakazi holds off Hashim Shah with both Bury athletes just behind Liverpool’s Kingston Amaechi

Bury AC had a good representation of athletes at the fourth Sale Open meeting held at the Sportscity indoor arena on 31st January. Marvin Edwards took fifth place in the senior mens 60m sprint final with a season’s best time of 7.19 after coasting through his heat with a 7.27 performance. In the under 17 boys race Emmanuel Mufakazi took 2nd place in 7.55 just one hundredth of a second ahead of third placed Hashim Shah, with both athletes recording personal bests. For the under 15 girls, Grace Goodsell took fourth place in her race with a new best time of 8.27. Hattie Vaughan took third in her race recording 8.68 whilst Daisy Worthington took second in her heat with a pb of 8.75, showing good recovery from the previous day’s Northern Cross Country race. Daisy followed up her flat race with a third place in the 60m hurdles, setting a best time again with a performance of 11.0.

In the 200m sprints Mariella Digioia set a new best of 29.0 in taking third place in her under 20 womens race. Chelsey Lee also took third in her heat setting a season’s best of 33.93. James Coghlan, running in the under 17s, set a new personal best of 24.46 to take third in his race. Jenna Allen-Cartwright  recorded a season’s best of 28.38 in finishing third in her race. Hattie Vaughan was rewarded with a new personal best of 28.39 in winning her under 15 girls race. The previous day in the Vault Manchester competition Hattie set a new best of 2.42 in taking joint second in her pole vault competition. The vault moves Hattie up to 10th place in the UK indoor rankings for her age group.

In the 600m races, Viola Melingi took third place in her senior womens race with a new best time of 1.49,95. In the under 17 womens race Teegan Brady set a new personal best of 1.55.86, finishing in fourth place.

Grace Goodsell was Bury’s only competitor in the field events. Setting a new best leap of 4.60, Grace took 12th place overall in the mixed age competition. The next open meeting will take place on Sunday 6th March.
