Bury College Principal Charlie Deane received his chain of office as the new Honorary President of Bury Athletic Club at a packed presentation evening at Huntley Mount Unionist Club. Mark Granby, the Club Chairman, described the many successes achieved by the Club over the previous 12 months before announcing the awards which were presented by Mr Deane.

The first category was the coaches male and female athletes of the year for each age category and awarded to athletes who show commitment in training and competition and a positive attitude to their fellow athletes. The winners were Byron Edwards and Jenny Yates (Masters); Ben Coop and Katie Geelan (Seniors); Benn Heywood and Lauren Booth (under 20s); Oliver Makinson and Lucy Alcock (under 17s); Oliver Donnelly, Harriet Vaughan and Grace Goodsell (under 15s); Jerel Livingston and Ella Hall (under 13s) and Noah Carter and Connie Potts (under 11s).

The second category was the team managers’ athlete of the league award presented for each track and field league that Bury competes in. The winners were Brandon Wilson and Charlotte Larkin (YDL Lower); Hashim Shah, Jenna Allen-Cartwright and Teegan Brady (YDL Upper); Oliver Horford and Georgia Nuttall (Cheshire League) and Ben Coop, Mike Hunter and Lizzie Cheshire (Northern League). There was also an award to Sophie Whittaker who was presented with her medal for taking third place overall in the Under 18 England Fell Running Championships.

The Seniors’ Grand Prix, awarded to athletes who had amassed the largest number of points over a series of races was the next award category. The winners were Ben Coop and Jenny Yates (Seniors) and Jim Ardin and Alison Dale (Masters).

The Committee awards were then presented and these went to Chloe Fairhurst (Best Club Member); Mariella Digioia (Most Improved Athlete); Giles Bennett (JT Ratcliffe Award) and Roger Morley and Harriet Vaughan (Sandra Newton Memorial Award).

Finally, athletes who had achieved their AAAs performance standards were presented with their certificates and badges. The under 13s recipients were Ella Hall, Lucy Chandler, Erin Kenyon, Catherine Russell, Jerel Livingston, Elliott Savage and Evan Savage. For the under 15s there were awards for Grace Goodsell, Charlotte Larkin, Charlotte Speakman-Farnworth, Daisy Worthington, Holly Murray, Heledd Rimmer, Harriet Vaughan, Hannah Holland, Patrick Clarke and Francis Woodcock. Awards also went to Oliver Makinson, Hashim Shah and Jenna Allen-Cartwright in the under 17s. To have so many athletes achieving national standards is a strong indicator of the health of the club.
