Sophie Whittaker made it two county medals in a week representing Greater Manchester in the English Schools Cross Country Championships. Sophie was one of five Bury AC members who had been selected for championships held at the Norfolk County Ground in Norwich. The Bury College student came an excellent 26th out of a field of over 300 competitors in the senior girls race and was third GM counter helping the team secure bronze medals as third team. The performance rounded off what has been Sophie’s best season over cross country and a fitting way for her to end her English schools career.

Just 5 seconds separated Marcus Dey and Ollie Makinson in the intermediate boys race. Marcus was first GM finisher in 31st place with fellow triathlete Ollie in 39th and finishing as third counter for the team. The fact that just 5 seconds accounted for 8 places is an indication of the strength in depth of the championships recognised as the highest quality competition for young endurance runners in England.

In the junior boys race Francis Woodcock was the first GM counter in 49th position with team-mate Brandon Quinton 13seconds but 29 places behind him in 78th. Brandon was GM’s second counter.

Gilbert Vaughan was another Bury athlete to win a medal in a school national championship. Running in the Welsh Schools Cross Country Championships down in Brecon Gil helped his team to third place, securing a well-deserved bronze medal.

Daisy Worthington and Amy Garroch were representing Greater Manchester in the North West Sportshall championships and their performances helped the team to take second place.

Ben Coop shrugged off the harsh conditions in Sunday’s Wilmslow Half Marathon taking a superb 32nd place in the high quality field and knocking nearly 3 minutes off his previous lifetime best with an excellent 75.18. In Lancaster Byron Edwards and Jenny Yates competed in the Trimpell 20 mile trail race as part of their preparation for their forthcoming marathons. Byron took two minutes off his time for the race last year, despite the conditions, and Jenny was delighted with her time of 2:43.02.
